“This is a beautiful book… lovely photos, creative ideas and thoughtful insights. I love the personal family stories and how these weave into the author’s design decisions. A beautiful book on so many levels. It sits proudly on my coffee table! And I’ve gifted it to two friends already!”

  • "A lovely read"

    Francesca

“This beautifully laid out book with an abundance of illustrative photos is so much more than a design book. It is also a memoir, guiding us through the author's journey in mourning her parents as she redesigns the home she inherited from them. The mental health benefits to certain design choices, woven throughout the book, made me examine my surroundings in a different light and will be helpful to anyone needing to refresh their space.”

“Thoroughly enjoyed turning the pages! Loved that she showed us how to blend the old with the new and not break the bank along the way. Sometimes, a change in your home/space is just what your mind needs to feel renewed and alive again. Enjoyed all the before and after pictures, mixed with a little family history and humor along the way.”

    "Beautiful and therapeutic"

“I recently read this gorgeous book by Annie Guest called "Design For Your Mind", and it really resonated with me as such a valuable guide for not only re-imagining your living space, but designing it in a mindful and therapeutic way.

I loved that this book was both a beautiful journey of an old house transformation and the author's memoir. It was great to see the "before" and "after" photos and follow along with the journey. The chapter on clutter perfectly described how the clutter makes me feel and why decluttering reduces stress and anxiety.

The photos were beautiful and the whole experience of reading this book was very calming. Such a perfect weekend read!”

"...a most unique take on home improvement."

“When I received this book I was so surprised that it wasn’t just another book about home design. My very first college major was in Interior Design so to say I’ve read a few books like that is an understatement. Design For Your Mind by Annie Guest goes much much further…

Guest’s parents left her their home and she decided to renovate it in a way that would not only update it but reflect her parents’ lives and love. With before and after photos and also narrative it is interesting to see not only the improvements to the home but the healing process that the author goes through. It is a most unique take on home improvement. Guest is a mental health therapist.”

"It’s a beautiful book that you will spend hours pouring over."

“The before and after pictures are captured with brilliant photography. It’s a unique and original book. Annie Guest, a mental health therapist, attorney, and author was left her parents home. She wanted to reimagine it , not as their sad final years but the whole of their lives and also hers. This is more than being inspired by affordable interior decor. I was inspired by some of the quotes in the book.
‘I like to take advantage of a very high ceiling with a blue that mimics the sky. The color draws my eye upward and invites me to breathe.’ Isn’t that beautiful? I was amused when she said ‘the kitchen needed some color and highlights and a facial- not a facelift’!
Those that study psychology know that radical acceptance is a skill that clients learn to help them cope with strong emotions. She found that radical acceptance made her work with what she had and find ways to accept it - like toile covered walls and green carpet. What I liked reading the most was that after this experience she was more apt to dare herself to take a risk. She looked for opportunities that say well, why not?”

“Weekends are perfect for a slower pace for me, and it is raining outside, so this is the perfect time to read and savor the messages inside this book.

The author is a mental health therapist and after her parent's left her their house, she documents a process of grief and rebuilding. Taking each room, along with the exterior, Guest brings life back into this home while reliving memories and giving the places a renewed purpose. All this done with care and precision in ways that kept the budget in check as well as the memories.

This is a lovely book that I am sure to return to in moments I want to refresh and yet not lose. My sensible side appreciates the price consciousness and practicality of uses.

If this kind of creative expression is soothing for you, I highly recommend picking this up!”

    "Heartfelt, practical, and so needed."

“I just finished Design For Your Mind by Annie Guest, and honestly… wow.

This isn’t just a book about home design, it’s about healing, honoring the past, and creating a space that truly supports who you are today.

Annie takes us through her journey of renovating her parents’ home after loss, and the way she ties design to emotional and mental well-being really hit me. Her approach shows that creating a nurturing home doesn’t have to be expensive or picture-perfect, it just has to be intentional. I loved seeing the before-and-after photos, but even more, I loved her gentle reminder that our homes can be a source of comfort, creativity, and joy.

This book left me inspired not only to rearrange my space but also to think about how my home can recharge my life. 💛

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Heartfelt, practical, and so needed.”
