When it comes to books and reading, I’m old school. I love my print copies and treasure my rituals when a new book comes into my house--admiring the look and feel of the cover and the book jacket, appreciating the weight and finish and the smell of the paper stock, inserting my bookmark.
But gradually, and maybe grudgingly, I’ve come to appreciate other ways to read books that technology makes possible. Audiobooks, available on Spotify and other platforms, let me read even as I juggle housework or caregiving responsibilities, or when I’m working out or driving in my car.
Digital editions, available on Amazon Kindle and other platforms, save me money and space on my bookshelves, and the illuminated screens and the freedom to adjust font size can make reading books fun again for people with vision challenges.
Given the vital role that books play in our intellectual development, mental health, and lifetime brain health, it’s worth exploring these alternatives to print. They’ll help us keep reading books, no matter what life throws at us--even if we’re old school and the smell and feel of a first edition still makes us swoon.
